The Art Of Removing Things

PART 3: FLOW

“Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine the speed. If you become restless, speed up. If you become winded, slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Then, when you’re no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn’t just a means to an end but a unique event in itself.”

― JOHN PIRSIG

The last muse finished with a question

AND WHAT COMES NEXT?

The answer that came was:
practice and truth

The way to climb the creative curve, the part where all the work is done, the part that grips and won’t let go, the persistence, the birthing is achieved by connecting with truth.

It’s the upward stretch that requires the work, the digging in, persistence, the galvanisation of the what, the why that makes t and the when that it happens in.

The commitment, the crystallisation the state change the realisation and just when you think you can’t go on, can’t give anymore to the process the clouds clear and everything finds its place, this is connection.

Remember that connection will always come, trust the curve.

Use these points of truth as anchors and remove the resistance.

A climbing anchor is a system made up of individual anchor points that are linked together to create a master point that the rope and/or climbers clip into to be securely attached to the rock face they are climbing.

There are so many things that I want to write about so many facets such a huge subject that can have so many threads. But I need to remember that in order to finish a creative piece I need to remove things.

I do not seek to philosophically analyse the concept of truth.

truth

/truːθ/ the quality or state of being true

it has only itself to refer to

A constant, a certainty

Truth

Held

The tide | the phases of the moon | the phase of the sun | day | night | the turning of the planet | wind | rain | snow | weather

Gravity

Sight | hearing | smell | touch | the senses

The tracing of the start to the same place in the sky each year

Trees growing

Birth

Truth serves as the anchor points for the ascent up the creative curve

Steps in conncection

Steps to decide what is true

Is art a translation of truth?

“It’s kind of crazy but, in my experience, that’s the whole game: (1) becoming convinced that there is a voice inside you that really, really knows what it likes, and (2) getting better at hearing that voice and acting on its behalf.”

George Saunders

“Quality...you know what it is, yet you don’t know what it is. But that’s self-contradictory. But some things are better than others, that is, they have more quality. But when you try to say what the quality is, apart from the things that have it, it all goes poof! There’s nothing to talk about. But if you can’t say what Quality is, how do you know what it is, or how do you know that it even exists? If no one knows what it is, then for all practical purposes it doesn’t exist at all. But for all practical purposes it really does exist.”

John Pirsig - The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

When indigenous people use the word “ours’ they are expressing that which is shared

When ‘settlers’ use the word “ours” they are expressing that which is possessed or owned

It belongs to me

It belongs to us

Belonging

 Be [longing]

I am more than the history or circumstance given to me at birth

I belong to my life and my own self

To remove the longing for other and to work with what is

Truth recognises truth and everything else falls away.

At that point we find Connection

With a place

With nature

The

With a person

With an idea

With our senses

sight - sound - smell - touch

This is how all of humanity has connected with their surroundings and so all of those things are possible for all of us who possess some or all of them.

Walking the paths of others before and after us.

With creativity

With play

With a frequency

Music, the vibration of a speaker, a guitar string, a drum, a voice.

The magic of radio.

The rhythm of a city.

The peregrines hang on the wind. I feel the earth in ways impossible to them, as fish know the water in ways we cannot. The peregrines hover in the air, one behind the other; then, as if they’re feeling it with the same sense of knowledge that we take from sight, they find their moment, ride the opening within the air and are gone. They leave a gap in the mist, a place that fills with an understanding of the way another life form inhabits this earth.

Raynor Winn – Landlines

Persephone - Sarah Jeffs

Persephone is becoming the totem for this Muse journey. She is my angel and she is a female that marks an equal division in the year.

One of which begins with the Autumn Equinox that started my Muse last time.

She was born in truth, I was responding to truth.

I was listening to Crystalline on repeat and she and her sisters appeared.

Bjork. Genius. Magician. Witch.

I was responding to truth and as my most successful piece of work others in turn respond to the truth of Persephone.

“I listened to a Swedish poem. I didn’t understand the words, and yet I cried because it came from a place of truth, you could hear it.”

Harry Baker - poet

When your hearts match.

I was considering virtual reality recently, virtual as in a step away from, the same but different.

Almost reality.

A step away, a layer away.

We already live in a virtual reality a step removed (or many) from true connection.

When we live in a virtual world our senses don’t realise - the sensations are experienced through an interface.

As humans we are about to don another virtual layer.

Are these all steps away from truth?

When we create with others when we are in connection with others.

Mutual delight

Shared frief

Unknown outcomes

Where have you felt connection this week?

With yourself

With another

With a place

With a sensation or feeling

In order to connect less is more we need to feel truth in a pure form a single note.

Collaboration

A collaboration album

https://open.spotify.com/album/6PoJf3wAiIgIE7GMmfdAH4?si=Tq5FIP1bT2-XAJ36THaE8g

The joining of voices, movement, visual, melodic, theoretical.

Someone to work through the resistance with. Others. The other.

The magic of joining minds.

I cast my mind back to the 2 tapestries we have made as a community.

Image

Voice

I then acknowledge that working on the Muse for the last 2 years has been a collaboration with each author as well as the collective.

This Muse collection continues to be so Meta.

What does it take to collaborate to connect?

To remove self, to remove ego.

To walk at the same pace, to push forward when necessary to help the other to access the points of connection required to create.

Respect. Trust. Fluid. Open. Adaptable.

The ability to let go, to turn mine into ours.

To match the heartbeat. To join in unison.

All of the colours in light combine to make white space.

All of the colours in pigment combine to make brown earth.

Remote collaboration – part one and part two total freedom for the second artist after agreeing the points at which they will connect.

The magic of the reveal.

Group creativity is best with an element of antagonism – critical rather than co-operative – at play

When colours come together the individuals are removed and only the one remains.

Prism spectrum synchronises to white light.

Pigment colours synchronise to the colour of earth.

Work featuring artistic collaboration from Mr Jago, Dead One, Epok, Matthew James and Sal Illooli.

Knowing enough of the other artist to trust in the resulting work.

Each time we arrive at a point of truth we connect to the state of truth.

This can be amplified by creating similar conditions to previous truthful encounters.

The same music, the same smell, the same sensation, putting us in a state of

flow

Photos of moments I have stood in true connection.

Does taking the image change this?

What do you need to remove to stay in connection?

How do we know when something is right?
