VOICE
Verse 1 - The Thread
The voice.
It’s one of the first ways we express ourselves on entering this world. Trying it out with a scream.
Actually, isn’t it how the world came to be at all, trying out its own voice with a big bang? Setting ripples of change forth?
Since most of us use it every day, it might feel like a well worn path. Something deeply obvious and taken for granted. Yet, if we listen in closely, we recognise that the voice holds power(s), and can reach into our innermost being in an intimate manner that has a touch of magic to it.
Over the next three months I invite us to explore together the power and intimacy held by voice(s); to relearn what voice can be, in all its richness; to look at which voices pull our strings, and which we need/want to empower; and to reconnect to the world as breathing, speaking, and communing with us.
Each voice is so deeply unique and personal. It is much more than sound. Your voice, my voice have texture, depth and character. Almost colour, and temperature. Each and everyone has their own grain, cadence, hue, and tone.
Think of two familiar voices.
What are their grain, cadence, hue, and tone?
Are they warm, or cold?
Flat, or do they have depth?
When we describe the very special nature of individual voices, we can hear, see and sense how no two are alike, how they feel, not just to our ears, but to the whole of our bodies.
Some are sharp and cold, making us stiffen, and putting us on alert. Others are warm, bringing a sense of safety, care, and soothing. Some voices are like caramel slowly dripping into us. Whilst others express the resilience built through a life of struggle in their grainy fabric.
Whatever its unique character, voice seems to penetrate and do something with us. I distinctly remember how I felt about my partner’s voice at the beginning of our relationship. Since it began as a long-distance relationship, we had lots of time to familiarise ourselves with each other's voices over the phone. And each and every time I heard him it felt like sunshine slowly pouring into me, reaching my every corner. I purred like a cat, and had the visceral feeling that the waves of his voice were playing beautiful music with the strings of my being. There was such presence manifesting through his voice alone.
Which voices fill you up with ease and joy?
The prosody (the rhythmic and intonational character) of his voice reached my nervous system in a way that was wholesome for me, that allowed me to feel safe enough to be deeply touched and experience joy. Therapists, and all those who hold confidential, nurturing spaces for others, know how much our voice communicates about our intentions and our state. If we are mindful of that prosody by regulating our breath, the rhythm of our speech and the tone in which we speak, we create an environment where trust and safety can flourish. And yes, pleasure and beauty too.
We don’t need a pretty voice for that. Feeling grounded, safe and present matters much more. Much like the Incas had a system of threads that carried messages via an intricate code made of knots, thread length and colour called Quipus, our voice is a thread to who and how we are that we extend out to others.

In fact, it is one of our first links to the outside world. Whilst in the womb we experience a sound rich world: the mother’s gurgling organs, heartbeat and voice, as well as the voices of those around. We hear them before we can see them. Their prosody tells us how they are, and quite literally moves us. It conveys the knots of their stormy inner experience. Or the ease and smoothness of their heart. In the belly and as adults, our body mirrors these experiences to help our nervous system feel and understand them, so we know how to respond. It is not an exaggeration to say that voice moves or touches us. We are like instruments playing their own tunes, and slowly coming into resonance with one another, making each other’s strings vibrate in an attempt to synchronise.
Voice is sound and vibration, that turn into touch and movement. There is magic there that can bring us in contact with dormant parts of our selves. That is why singing is so powerful, and why it can make us feel so wonderful, and deeply touched. Whether we sing or listen. It can help come into full presence with our own instrument, and, especially if we are singing, tune it. From there it is easier to be in this world, and express ourselves, our voice in a way that feels confident, honest and present.
Singing massages our lungs, our heart, our belly and digestive organs. It can loosen so much and set it free. Like a thread showing it a way through that it didn’t know before. It isn’t about beautiful or pretty singing, but rather a quest for expression, that accepts the voice as it is, and sets its vibrational potential free.
Try this with me:
Find a comfortable way to sit or stand. Take a few comfortable, slow and pleasant breaths in through the nose, and out through the mouth. You might want to sigh or yawn as you exhale.
Now with your mouth softly closed, hum until you feel like breathing in again, and notice the vibrations in your body. Repeat this a few times.
Now let your mouth open with your lower jaw hanging loose, and make an A sound. Feel where your body vibrates now. Breath in whenever your body feels like doing so. Do this a few times.
Then do the same with the sound O. Where do you sense the vibrations now?
Or maybe you prefer to listen to singing, a powerful practice in its own right.
Most of us know these moments when, whether there are words or not, and even if we don’t understand them, we feel like a voice reaches into our guts, like it expresses something we carry in us, even if we don’t know what it is. This can be a tremendous release, like moving something through layers into the fresh air.
I offer you two such audio experiences to massage your soul with the vibrancy and thread of song.
First, a traditional Corsican song that finds the back strings of my heart, and sets them slowly on fire, galloping on the wild plains of my spirit.

Secondly, an Icaro, a traditional shamanic song from Northern Latin America, used during ceremonies of healing associated with plant preparations. It is known as a song line.
As much as we in the West focus on the healing power of the plants, for most native people of the region the Icaros carry the real healing power, because of their ability to touch us deeply in our flesh during the experience, and to provide a thread for our mind, emotions and spirit to journey along. Hence why it is called a song line. Notice how my voice changes grain, depth, tone and cadence to paint a different emotional palette for you to explore, and notice maybe how it moves you differently with those changes.
The voice is incredible. The voice is powerful. Each and every one is a magical, mighty thread that connects us to the world, from depth of being to depth of being.
It paints pictures, and changes our inner weather fronts. It comforts or shakes up. Your voice, my voice. It might be raw like that of Tom Waits. It may even not be classically beautiful, but it is always a unique portal between us.
Can we let ourselves be touched by it, and let others be touched by our own magical instrument?
Can we lend our voice to this world, and weave it in?

Let us create a Vocal Tapestry as a community
Together with Grace, another member of this coven of witches and wizards, we invite you to do just this, by throwing your magical thread of voice into our pot.
What Big Bang of sound will emerge from our Collective Energies, and how will its waves ripple through our community?
How could the way your feel be expressed as a sound?
Let us hear the voices of our community express emotions and sensations through sound vibrations.
To add your voice to our Vocal Tapestry follow these 3 steps:
- set up your phone to record your voice, making sure you’re close enough
listen to this short guidance
record the sound(s) that emerge through you
send the recording to us via email info@thecollectiveenergies.com
or via WhatsApp to +49 151 209 066 87 (you can use the Audionote function for your recording)”
Dear Collective,
I think ( I hope) a few of us have benefitted from some time away these last few weeks. I personally had to put the brakes on and screech to an almighty stop for a while. I am truly feeling the benefit of that space now.
The membership is going to be changing and of course, I wanted you to be the first to know.
As of October 2nd, I will be introducing a new opportunity to connect with me and each other in the live space - ORBIT. This livestream session, (via zoom) will take place on the first Saturday of each month. It essentially supersedes what was previously our weekly Collective Energy, and will now be rolled into the membership.
New name, new energy, new focus, same old jokes.
I hope this arrives as music to your attuned ears.
I have thought a great deal about where to take this membership in its second year and my feeling is that I am all about the live experience of human connection, and this is what we all need more than anything else: community & connection.
This is where I personally thrive and this is where I feel I can offer the optimal amount of support to as many people as possible. I never ever wanted the membership to be purely an on demand movement library. The pressure of creating, filming, editing, producing and all to a schedule requires an enormous amount of energy, resources and time and it is not at all where my passion and skills lie. I also know that some of you struggle to make time for recordings, and I have zero interest in persuading anyone anymore, about - well - anything.
I will still film practices and the on demand site will remain as a resource which will continue to grow slowly over time. But I will do so when I'm creatively inspired to do so, when I have something to offer instead of churning content out for the sake of it.
I was attempting to be too many things to too many people and it was completely overwhelming me. I was becoming tired, jaded and impatient. This is never ever in alignment and only ever blocks creative potential. What I can do is what I can do.
So in streamlining my efforts, I am prioritising and embodying that creative life force which simply needs the space to express in fullness. I trust without any doubt whatsoever that this is the right thing for myself, and therefore everyone else who needs to be here.
What this means for the membership is that we will roll ORBIT into your monthly/ annual subscription. It will also be available as a drop in class should you prefer that option. For those who cannot (or prefer not to) attend ORBIT in person, we will lower the monthly subscription price to £15 so you will still benefit from everything else, and have access to Circle, just without the live element.
I will be communicating further via email about pricing structure and I will also be offering all of our Founding Members the opportunity to renew their annual membership at a special price. This is purely a gesture of huge thanks - for the support and belief that has assisted in the creation and evolution of this beautiful space.
So there are no shiny new practices this month, but in line with our seasonal muse I would love to point to the following which are already in our library.
Rejoice In Voice
Sing Through My Voice
I would love also to offer you all the opportunity to book into ORBIT on October 2nd.
Our October session is open to every single one of our current members for free.
Simply use the link below and book into the MEMBERS ONLY ticket option as this will ensure you secure a free space in advance.
With all my love for now,
